Strength and device both matter

The six injection strengths range from 2.5 to 15 mg. The current label includes single-dose pens and vials, and four-dose multidose vials and KwikPens. Dose volume differs by presentation. Pediatric and adult maximum doses also differ, so the strength range is not an instruction for every patient. For more on dose schedules and presentations, read the Tirzepatide Dosing guide.

The thyroid boxed warning

Tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rats; whether it causes these tumors in humans is unknown. Mounjaro must not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).

Other treatment considerations

Pancreatitis, serious gastrointestinal effects, dehydration-related kidney injury and gallbladder disease are among the warnings. The label advises additional or non-oral contraception for four weeks after starting and after each dose increase for people using oral hormonal contraceptives. Discuss pregnancy plans and procedures with the clinical team.

Mounjaro and Zepbound

Both contain tirzepatide, but their approved uses differ. They require separate prescriptions and product-specific instructions. If the presentation supplied changes, check the product name and device with the pharmacist and ask for any training needed. Counterfeit products can also resemble legitimate injection pens; in October 2026, UK authorities seized more than 12,000 fake tirzepatide and retatrutide weight-loss pens.
