In brief
- Wegovy tablets are now available from Swedish pharmacies, including through pharmacy websites, before manufacturer Novo Nordisk has officially launched the oral version in Sweden.
- The initial supply has reached Sweden through parallel import or distribution from another EU market rather than Novo’s own Swedish distribution channel.
- The 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg strengths are among the first being supplied, while the 25 mg maintenance strength is expected later in 2026.
- Wegovy tablets require a prescription in Sweden and are not currently included in the Swedish high-cost protection system.
- The development shows how an EU-authorised medicine can become available in one member state through parallel distribution even before the manufacturer launches it there directly.
SVENSK SAMMANFATTNING
Swedish patients can now obtain the tablet form of Wegovy from pharmacies in Sweden, even though Novo Nordisk has not yet officially launched oral Wegovy in the country.
The first supplies have instead arrived through parallel import or distribution from Germany, where the tablet was launched in September. Swedish pharmacy publications report that the medicine can now be ordered through pharmacy websites as well as supplied through the normal pharmacy system.
It is an unusual but important example of how medicine availability can work inside the European market. An EU-wide marketing authorisation does not necessarily mean that a medicine is commercially launched in every member state at the same time. Parallel distribution can sometimes make an authorised product available in another EU or EEA market before the manufacturer’s own local launch.
Is Wegovy available as a tablet in Sweden?
Yes. Wegovy tablets are now available through at least some Swedish pharmacies.
The oral version contains semaglutide, the same active substance used in injectable Wegovy, but it is taken once daily rather than injected once weekly. The European Medicines Agency says the tablets are intended for adults and should be taken on an empty stomach after at least eight hours of fasting, with patients waiting at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.
Wegovy remains a prescription-only medicine. Availability at a pharmacy therefore does not mean it can be purchased without an appropriate prescription.

Which Wegovy tablet strengths are available?
Initial Swedish supplies include the lower 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg tablet strengths. The 25 mg strength used later in treatment is expected to become available later in 2026.
Wegovy tablets use a gradual dose-escalation schedule. Patients should follow the dose prescribed for them rather than selecting a strength based on pharmacy availability.
How much do Wegovy tablets cost in Sweden?
Early Swedish pharmacy pricing reported by Svensk Farmaci is approximately SEK 2,000 for a 30-day supply of the lowest tablet strength and around SEK 2,600 for the 9 mg strength.
Actual pharmacy prices can vary and should be checked at the time a prescription is dispensed.
FASS currently lists Wegovy tablets as prescription medicines that are not included in Sweden’s high-cost protection system. This means patients should not assume that the usual pharmaceutical benefit ceiling will cover the cost of the medicine.
Why is Wegovy available before Novo launches it in Sweden?
The answer lies in the EU and EEA system for parallel distribution of medicines.
Oral Wegovy has an EU marketing authorisation. The European Commission authorised the tablet formulation during 2026 after the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use recommended extending Wegovy’s authorisation to include the daily oral formulation.
Novo launched Wegovy tablets in Germany in September, but the company has not yet announced a date for its own Swedish launch.
Parallel distributors can, under the applicable regulatory framework, obtain an authorised medicine from one EEA market and distribute it in another. The Swedish Medical Products Agency explains that a parallel-distributed medicine is the same medicinal product as the directly distributed version, although packaging and labelling may be adapted for the Swedish market.
That is different from an individual patient simply ordering prescription medicine from an overseas website. The Wegovy tablets reaching Swedish pharmacies are entering the regulated pharmacy supply chain through commercial parallel distribution.
Can Wegovy tablets be ordered online in Sweden?
Swedish pharmacy reporting indicates that the tablets can be ordered through the online services of participating pharmacies, subject to stock availability.
That is consistent with Sweden’s broader pharmacy rules. Approved Swedish pharmacies can supply prescription medicines online, but patients still need to meet the prescription and identification requirements that apply to the medicine.
Consumers should therefore distinguish between ordering a prescription medicine through an approved Swedish pharmacy and purchasing from an unfamiliar overseas website simply because it advertises semaglutide or a GLP-1 product online.
Does EU approval mean Wegovy tablets are available everywhere in Europe?
No. This is one of the more useful lessons from the Swedish development.
A central EU marketing authorisation allows an authorised medicine to be marketed across the European Union, but it does not mean the manufacturer launches it simultaneously in every country or that pharmacies in every member state immediately have stock.
Commercial launch dates, distribution, pharmacy supply, pricing and reimbursement can still differ substantially between countries.
That distinction is particularly relevant for patients researching medicines across borders. Our guide to using an EU prescription in another country explains why prescription recognition and actual medicine availability are separate questions.
What does this mean for patients in Sweden?
The immediate change is that some Swedish patients prescribed Wegovy now have access to an oral formulation without waiting for Novo’s official Swedish launch.
However, several practical limitations remain. Wegovy tablets require a prescription, pharmacy stock can vary, the full range of strengths is not yet available through the initial parallel-distribution supply, and the medicine is currently outside Sweden’s high-cost protection system.
Patients already using injectable Wegovy should not switch formulations or doses based solely on availability. The tablet and injection have different administration and dosing schedules, and treatment changes should be discussed with the prescribing healthcare professional.
The wider significance is that Sweden provides a clear example of the difference between EU authorisation, national commercial launch and actual pharmacy availability. Those events do not always happen at the same time.
