Nurtec vs Ubrelvy Cost: Compare Coverage and Supply

United States / Migraine

Neither Nurtec nor Ubrelvy is universally cheaper for every US patient. A meaningful comparison starts with whether the medicines are suitable for the same treatment purpose, then checks the exact supply and your coverage. Comparing two advertised prices without those details can produce the wrong answer.

Quick answer

Nurtec is indicated for acute migraine treatment and prevention of episodic migraine in adults; Ubrelvy is acute-only. Compare pharmacy quotes for the clinically appropriate prescriptions, then check coverage and assistance. Their conditional $0 commercial offers do not establish equal long-term cost or eligibility.

First establish whether the prescriptions serve the same purpose

The Nurtec label and Ubrelvy label make the key distinction clear: both treat migraine attacks in adults, while only Nurtec among these two is also indicated for episodic prevention. They contain different active ingredients and are not generic substitutes.

If you are comparing an acute Nurtec prescription with acute Ubrelvy, ask the prescriber to specify the supply and directions for each clinically acceptable option. If Nurtec is prescribed for prevention, Ubrelvy alone does not provide an equivalent preventive regimen. A comparison may need to include the cost of a separate preventive treatment.

This page does not determine which drug works better for you. Treatment response, contraindications, interactions and other health circumstances belong in the clinical discussion. The cost exercise begins after the clinician identifies appropriate options.

Compare these details side by side

Information to match before comparing your final payment
Question Nurtec ODT Ubrelvy
Active ingredient Rimegepant Ubrogepant
Treatment role Acute treatment; also episodic prevention in adults Acute treatment in adults
Form and strength 75 mg orally disintegrating tablet 50 mg or 100 mg tablet
Supply to quote Exact tablet count and intended acute or preventive use Exact strength and tablet count under the prescribed directions
Coverage to verify Indication, quantity, approval and network pharmacy Quantity, approval and network pharmacy
Price to compare Confirmed final payment for your prescription Confirmed final payment for your prescription

Use the same pharmacy and quote date for an initial comparison if practical, then check other in-network pharmacies. Record whether each number is a cash price, an insured payment or the amount after eligible assistance. A quote with assistance applied to one drug and no assistance applied to the other answers only that particular scenario.

Do not assume equal tablet counts mean equal treatment coverage. For example, Ubrelvy directions can include a second dose when appropriate, whereas Nurtec’s daily maximum is one 75 mg dose. The labels and your prescription govern use; this observation is not dosing advice.

Why list prices do not identify the cheaper option

AbbVie publishes a January 2026 Ubrelvy WAC of $1,139.09 for a described 30-day supply on its cost page. A tablet count is not specified beside that figure. Pfizer’s Nurtec patient-pricing page instead directs patients to the pharmacy or insurer for an exact amount. Those sources do not supply a matched pair of patient prices.

This guide therefore does not declare a cash-price winner or calculate a percentage saving from the two websites. A manufacturer list price compared with a retail coupon, a different package or a preventive supply would be an uneven comparison.

If both prescriptions would be paid in cash, ask for the full quoted amounts and quantities on the same day. If using insurance, request the final claim results. Keep a note of unconfirmed costs such as a required visit or delivery charge rather than quietly treating them as zero.

Compare coverage before relying on savings offers

Ask the plan about each medicine separately. Find out whether coverage is available for the intended use, whether approval is required, what quantity is allowed and which pharmacy can fill it at the quoted payment. A formulary preference can make one suitable option less expensive for you even when list prices suggest otherwise.

If one is denied, obtain the reason and ask the prescriber about the appropriate exception or appeal. HealthCare.gov explains these steps for Marketplace coverage. Do not assume that a prior authorization for one product transfers to another or that an acute approval covers a preventive prescription.

Ask when an approval expires and what happens at the next plan year. If you are already established on treatment, check whether a proposed switch would create a new consultation, approval delay or dispensing problem. Include those access questions in the discussion, even where they do not have a simple dollar value.

Both advertise $0; their terms still need separate checks

The Nurtec terms and Ubrelvy terms each describe a conditional commercial savings offer with a $7,000 annual maximum for qualifying covered patients. Both exclude government-funded coverage and cash-paying patients. Equal headline figures do not mean the programs operate identically.

Nurtec’s current terms expire December 31, 2026 and exclude patients subject to accumulator adjustment or copay maximizer programs. The programs also have different coverage-verification provisions. Check the current terms for your own situation instead of choosing based on the size of an advertised introductory benefit.

Ask each program the same questions: am I eligible, is my exact claim supported, what benefit remains and what happens when support ends? Then ask the pharmacy to confirm the final amount. Keep the response date because program terms can change.

A practical comparison worksheet for the next conversation

  1. Write each clinically suitable prescription with its intended use, strength, quantity and days’ supply.
  2. Record the pharmacy, quote date and complete patient payment under each valid route.
  3. Record the coverage decision, approval expiry and any unresolved restrictions.
  4. Record assistance eligibility, remaining benefit and renewal or expiry date.
  5. Add separate care, delivery or membership charges and mark unknowns.
  6. Take the comparison to your clinician and pharmacist before making a treatment change.

The result can be “one option costs less under my confirmed coverage,” “the quotes are not yet comparable,” or “the cheaper option does not serve the same purpose.” Any of those is more useful than a universal winner based on list prices.

If both options remain unaffordable, ask the clinician about other suitable treatments and ask the relevant manufacturer about separate patient assistance. Do not switch, combine medicines or adjust the schedule because an offer appears cheaper. A cost comparison supports the clinical decision; it does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nurtec cheaper than Ubrelvy?

There is no universal answer. Compare final pharmacy payments for clinically suitable prescriptions with clearly stated quantities and payment routes. The published manufacturer figures are not a matched pair of patient quotes.

Are Nurtec and Ubrelvy interchangeable generics?

No. They contain different active ingredients and have different labeled treatment roles. A change requires a prescribing decision, not a generic substitution based only on price.

Can I compare the same tablet count?

You can record equal counts, but they may not represent equivalent use. Directions, acute versus preventive purpose and any repeat dosing affect what the supply means. Ask the prescriber to define the appropriate comparison.

If both savings cards offer $0, does cost stop mattering?

No. Eligibility, coverage, benefit limits, expiry and future fills still matter. Confirm the current claim and what you may owe when assistance changes or ends.
