Glyxambi: Uses, Forms and Safety Reference

Glyxambi combines empagliflozin and linagliptin in one tablet for adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains no metformin. Its approved uses differ from those of the ingredients prescribed separately.

The approved uses and formulations described here follow US prescribing information. They may differ in other countries.

Medicine detail Details
Active ingredient(s) empagliflozin / linagliptin
Medicine class SGLT2 inhibitor / DPP-4 inhibitor combination
Forms and strengths Oral tablets: 10 mg/5 mg and 25 mg/5 mg

Two mechanisms in one tablet

Empagliflozin increases urinary glucose excretion through SGLT2 inhibition. Linagliptin inhibits DPP-4, affecting incretin activity and glucose regulation. The US combination label covers adults with type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise; it also describes empagliflozin’s cardiovascular-death risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

Reading both strength numbers

The tablets contain 10/5 mg or 25/5 mg of empagliflozin/linagliptin and are taken once daily. The linagliptin amount remains 5 mg in both strengths. A change between packs therefore changes one ingredient’s amount, not both in parallel.

How Glyxambi differs from related medicines

Jardiance contains empagliflozin alone, while Tradjenta contains linagliptin alone. Glyxambi combines the two. It does not have all of Jardiance’s broader heart-failure and kidney indications. Synjardy is another empagliflozin combination, but it contains metformin rather than linagliptin.

Safety spans both components

Relevant warnings include ketoacidosis, volume depletion and genital or urinary infections from the SGLT2 component, plus pancreatitis, severe joint pain and bullous pemphigoid associated with DPP-4 inhibitors. Kidney function and concurrent medicines need review. A normal-looking glucose value does not exclude SGLT2-associated ketoacidosis.

Avoiding duplicate ingredients

When starting Glyxambi, confirm whether it replaces any separate empagliflozin or linagliptin tablets. Taking a combination alongside one of its ingredients can unintentionally duplicate treatment. New severe abdominal pain, skin blisters or significant dehydration should be assessed promptly.

Questions and answers

Does Glyxambi contain metformin?

What changes between 10/5 mg and 25/5 mg?

The empagliflozin amount changes; linagliptin remains 5 mg.
