Cross-border ePrescriptions and MyHealth@EU
Check whether your electronic prescription can reach the pharmacy you plan to use, for the exact country pair and direction.
Two digital services must be distinguished
The Commission describes cross-border ePrescription/eDispensation and Patient Summary services under MyHealth@EU. An ePrescription route lets a pharmacist access a prescription from a participating origin system; a Patient Summary carries key health information. Availability of the second is not proof of the first.
Check the pair and the direction
State your prescription-origin country and the country where you want it dispensed. Then check an operational source for that direction and the participating pharmacy or region. Connections develop over time; a country being named as a participant does not establish every pair, pharmacy or medicine. Our dataset keeps inbound and outbound availability separate.
What the checked operational sources establish
TEHIK publishes an Estonia-centred matrix. In the version checked, it lists ePrescription exchange in both directions between Estonia and Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain. Its negative entries for Estonia’s pairs with France, Luxembourg, Malta and the Netherlands describe those pairs, rather than universal absence of cross-border prescribing in those countries.
Finnish prescriptions abroad have their own guidance
Kanta lists Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain as destinations where Finnish ePrescriptions can be used. This evidence concerns Finnish prescriptions used abroad; it should not be reversed to claim that every prescription from those countries is accepted in Finland. Check Kanta’s current destination and pharmacy instructions before travel.
Prepare with the prescriber and pharmacy
Ask whether your prescription type can be exchanged, what identification is required and whether any consent or release setting must be completed in your home system. Ask the destination pharmacy whether it participates and can process that prescription at your planned visit. Follow the official origin-country guidance on documents, rather than treating an app screen as a universal dispensing document.
- Prescription origin and dispensing destination.
- Exact participating pharmacy and, where relevant, region.
- Medicine, strength, formulation and prescription type.
- Identity document and any origin-system preparation.
- Fallback document if electronic access fails.
- Payment and documents needed for a possible insurer claim.
Plan for an electronic-service failure
Before travelling, ask your prescriber what suitable paper cross-border prescription can be provided if needed. If retrieval fails at the pharmacy, ask whether the issue concerns connection availability, patient identification or the prescription/product. Do not assume a printout or screenshot resolves every failure.
Electronic dispensing is separate from online ordering
A participating physical pharmacy may retrieve a foreign ePrescription in a country that prohibits prescription internet sales. Conversely, a domestic online pharmacy may require a prescription in its own national system. The Estonia profile illustrates the latter: secure identification and a prescription in the national centre are part of the online route.
Payment still needs an insurer check
Electronic exchange does not itself authorise a reimbursement claim or guarantee direct insurance payment at the destination pharmacy. Kanta gives Finnish patients instructions for seeking Kela reimbursement for eligible purchases abroad. Other insurance situations require their own home-insurer guidance.
