How prescription access works in the US
There is no single way to obtain a prescription medication in the United States. Depending on the medication and individual circumstances, prescribing, dispensing, insurance and payment may involve different healthcare and pharmacy services.
Retail and online pharmacies
A prescription can be dispensed by a local pharmacy or a legitimate online pharmacy. The pharmacy handles dispensing, but it does not necessarily provide the medical consultation needed for a new prescription.
Telehealth and online prescribing
Some online healthcare services provide clinical consultations that may result in a prescription when considered appropriate by a qualified prescriber. Prescribing and dispensing may be handled by separate organisations.
Mail-order pharmacy services
Insurers, pharmacy benefit services and other pharmacy providers may offer home delivery for eligible prescriptions. Coverage, refill rules and pharmacy networks vary.
Medication costs and savings
What a patient pays can depend on insurance coverage, pharmacy pricing and the medication involved. Depending on eligibility and circumstances, manufacturer programs, discount services and other savings routes may also be available.

International & Cross-Border Access
Some US consumers research pharmacies outside the United States because medication costs and access can differ between countries. Cross-border medication access requires particular attention to pharmacy credentials, dispensing location, prescription requirements, shipping policies and applicable rules.
Canadian pharmacies and US consumers
MediSearcher maintains dedicated resources about Canadian pharmacy services and US consumers, including pharmacy research, shipping information and regulatory changes that may affect cross-border access.

Using online pharmacies safely
A professional-looking website does not by itself establish that an online pharmacy is legitimate. Check who operates the service, where medication is dispensed, whether an appropriate prescription is required and whether relevant pharmacy credentials can be independently verified.
Be particularly cautious with websites that offer prescription medicines without appropriate prescription requirements, obscure the identity or location of the dispensing pharmacy, or make unsupported claims about medication availability, safety or pricing.
For a more detailed process, read how to verify a legitimate online pharmacy.
How we research US medication access
MediSearcher separates medication reference information, medication-cost research, prescription-access information and pharmacy research because they answer different questions. Where relevant, we use official regulatory, manufacturer, insurance, pharmacy and healthcare sources.
Medication prices, insurance coverage, savings programs, service availability and cross-border rules can change. Time-sensitive guides include review dates, and important current information should be verified with the responsible pharmacy, manufacturer, insurer, regulator or healthcare provider.
Commercial relationships do not determine our editorial coverage or conclusions. Sponsored or commercial relationships are disclosed where applicable.
